FAQs

How do I design a knife?

First, I’ll ask you what is the general purpose for your knife: hunting, cooking, defense, everyday carry, etc.

Next, I’ll ask if you have a preference for the type of steel: mono-steel or a layered/Damascus patterned steel.

After that, we’ll discuss the handle style you would like: full tang, through tang, frame handle, etc., and go over the dimensions: blade and handle length and width, tip profile, and any specific edge grind or integral bolster preferences.

Next, we’ll discuss the finish, including handle materials, optional accessories like multi-piece construction, mosaic pins, guards, or pommels.

Finally, we’ll cover any file work or hand engraving for the blade, and whether you’d like to include a holster or case.

If you are unsure how to answer to any of these questions, that’s okay! I’m more than happy to offer suggestions based on the intended use of the knife.

After you have an idea of what you would like, send me an email and we’ll schedule a phone call.

How do I care for my RK Forge knife?

Specific care instructions will depend on the type of steel you choose. In general, you should never put the knife in the dishwasher and should always hand wash it.

If you are in a moisture-rich environment, make sure to thoroughly dry both the blade and handle and apply a suitable oil to prevent rust or damage (olive oil, mineral oil, or tung oil).

Depending on the edge geometry, you should avoid using an automatic knife sharpener. Hand-sharpening with a wet stone is recommended. Knives naturally dull with use, and if you are not comfortable sharpening your knife yourself or with a local professional, I am more than happy to resharpen your knives. The customer is responsible for shipping and a $20 resharpening fee.

Each knife is handmade custom for you! No two knives will ever be alike. Because of this, it is possible imperfections could arise. If the knife has been used for its intended purpose, I stand by my product and will happily fix or replace any imperfections over its lifetime.

How much does a custom knife cost?

Depending on the complexity of the design and the type of steel you choose, prices can vary greatly. For a custom knife, a mono-steel blade starts at $275, and a layered or Damascus steel blade starts at $375.

How long does it take to get my RK Forge knife?

Depending on complexity of design and the number of orders I currently have, you can expect it to take between 3-5 weeks (I do work full time as a career firefighter). You will be notified with updates throughout the entire process.

What is Damascus steel?

Generally speaking, Damascus steel is a multi-layered pattern of steel made from at least two types of steel that is folded and stacked multiple times by hand in the forge.

Can I use my own wood for the handle?

Absolutely! I would be honored to incorporate wood special to you, however, depending on the type of wood, I may offer recommendations based on its structural properties.
